RTD elements are resistance based precision temperature sensing components. A change in temperature provides a linear change in resistance output from the RTD element. These elements are the core measurement technology utilized in RTD probes and assemblies

There are two basic types of RTD elements 

Thin film elements where the specific metal materials (platinum and nickel primarily) are deposited onto a high puirty alumina (ceramic) substrate and resistance pattern is created through photolithography, etching and laser trimming

Wire-wound elements where a thin platinum wire is wrapped and fused inside a glass casing or embedded in ceramic.
