Pt100 RTD

Pt100 is a platinum based RTD (resistance temperature detector) with 100 ohm output at 0°C and a 0.385 change per degree C.

  • Pt100 Temperature Sensors typically have Higher Accuracy and Stability than thermocouples or infrared temperature sensors.
    • Temperature range of -328 (-200°C) Cryogenic through 1,562°F (850°C).
    • RTD sensors can have a slower temperature response time.
  • RTD Pt100 elements are commonly encased in a metal tube or fitting to protect the sensing element itself. The elements are primarliy made in 2 designs.
    • A Thin film ceramic chip is the most utlized design, where the platinum is deposited onto the alumina (ceramic) substrate and 100 ohm resistance pattern is created through photolithography, etching and laser trimming.
    • Wire-wound elements has a fine diameter platinum wire is wrapped and fused inside a glass casing or embedded in ceramic.
    • Exposed Pt100 (RTD) sensor assemblies can provide a 5 times Faster Temperature Response as compared to designs encased in a probe.
  • Lead Wire construction can be 2, 3 or 4 wire designs.
    • The 3 wire is the most common design, the 4 wire configuration can provide additional accuracy.
    • 2 wire designs can have lower accuracy with lead wire adding resistance and more commonly used with Pt1000 ohm element.
  • Pt100's are also relatively immune to electrical noise and can be used in industrial environments, around motors, generators and other high voltage equipment.
    • Additional electrical immunity can be achieved with shielding and ground wire designs.
